When do you put down pre-emergent here? What kind?

I've never used pre-emergent for weeds, but maybe this is the year. When do you put it down? What brand or product do you use for a small, north facing (fairly shady) yard?

The Scott fertilizer company should give you an idea of when to fertilize in your area. I live in Western PA and generally wait for the forsythia to appear (yellow leaf shrub). Once the leaves appear, I have a few weeks to fertilize. Basically, this is all dependent on the soil temperature.

Here is a soil temp map (so before soil temps are mid-50s consistently). https://www.greencastonline.com/tools/soil-temperature

The half green/half gold forsythia is the usual rule of thumb

Doing the same thing this year OP. I don’t mind preen in an ornamental bed but I also have three jugs of corn gluten I’m going to try out. I plan to create a raised bed garden for food with a small greenhouse in the center. I’ll use the corn gluten there mostly
