Daily family rituals

How many of these kinds of things can you fit in a day? These are daily(daily ish is ok) routines, quick ones, that we love. See below.

My kids love the ‘idea’ of these too, but they also know we have lessons/a little bit of sports/meeting at school for an upcoming sport/mom at book club/picking up groceries, have to buy a Tshirt and poster board or whatever, through the week. Some days I work in the evening. Scheduled with clients.

For example, I have dinner on the list, of course! It’s possible for cooking, eating, cleaning dishes to take 30-90 minutes even if it’s not active cooking. We always fit in meals, homework is minimal/managed by the child (but there have been periods of needing to help). Reading is almost a given for our bedtime routine

_____
What of these do I need to drop as a theoretical daily wish?

Bible app listening / discussion
Personal prayer
Breakfast
Lunch (weekends)
Dinner (no screens, connection)
3 of us want to do weights at home
Chores (15m or less)
Chore check (accountability from us 2 minutes but we can’t forget bc this is how we pay them)
Homework
Reading
Consistent bedtime wind-down and lights out
Sunday: lay out clothes for the week

It would drive me bonkers to have five outfits sitting out all week, but that's me.

Something we do at dinner is lows and highs where everyone shares their low and high for the day. It's a nice ritual that connects us.

I like your highs and lows idea. I remembered another one overnight that is short and simple (will try to remember it again today)

I only lay this out for my 2 younger children. I make sure they have enough for the week so I know I don’t have to do laundry if I don’t get to it on weeknights. I put them away in the drawer, but visually just check they have enough socks, underwear, hoodies etc.

I think you have to start from where you are. If you're not doing any of these things, you're not going to be able to magically start doing all of them. Which ones are you already doing? Keep those up, and pick your favorite other one to add. Give that a few months, see if you can get it to fit into the routine and become a habit. Then maybe you can pick up another one.

For our family of five (all kids under age six) we do:

Dinner (no screens, connection)
Chores (15m or less)
Chore check (this is basically part of chores for us cause the kids are so little)
Reading
Consistent bedtime wind-down and lights out

As a fellow believer I would keep the bolded, but if things are getting tight you can seriously prune them down. Instead of a Bible app listening and discussion, a paragraph of whatever Bible book you are working through and a prayer works too. Sure, most nights aim for more, but when things get tight just do something. Some nights we literally just do a verse. Same with personal prayer (and possible Scripture reading). Most of the time get out that prayer journal or cards and do a full prayer, but in busy seasons a quick prayer at the right time keeps the habit.

You can have the same idea for other parts of your list (chores, reading) where sometimes doing less but still having basically the placeholder keeps the habit up.

I gotta ask given the title of the thread - were you just at the talk at TFCA on rhythms?

No never heard of it

Bible app listening / discussion, prayer - no but this isn’t a goal of ours

Breakfast - yes, freshly cooked daily on school days but slides to cold cereal a couple times a month

Lunch (weekends) - not always with all the sports and activities

Dinner (no screens, connection) - most of the time. Screens are not the issue but the temptation of takeout is

3 of us want to do weights at home
- I do, DH does not

Chores (15m or less) - errrr. Trying to be better. DS does pick up daily and I do laundry, DH and I do dishes but hand wash items tend to pile up

Chore check (accountability from us 2 minutes but we can’t forget bc this is how we pay them) - yes but often this is a daily reminder to pick up or put away and then I verify. A weekly chore check would be better time wise

Homework - yes

Reading - yes along with regular bedtime, except special events or activities which occur 1-3x/ month
Consistent bedtime wind-down and lights out

Sunday: lay out clothes for the week - no

Why on earth do you want to lay out clothes for the week? That leaves no room for getting up every morning in the mood for a certain outfit, which always happens to me.

What do you wear on Saturday?

My process is as I’m folding clothes, I lay it out for two kids. These go in their drawers along with whatever else I fold.

They for sure have many choices. I just need to visually confirm the fact that I don’t *have* to do laundry until next weekend.

“What do they wear Saturday?” - obviously they have more clothes than 5 days. If you could see me do this, every few weeks, you might see me order some pants from Target Sunday night to be delivered mid week. Someone’s pants got holes in the knees, went missing, etc.
