Why do parents send there child to school sick?

Anonymous
I am very frustrated by a set of parents who always send their child to school sick. They think they are being considerate by putting a mask on their child but it doesn’t prevent spread.

1) One time the child had stomach cramps, vomiting, and diarrhea. Parents sent child to school and child told peers at school “I told my parents that I will try but I don’t think I can make it at school the whole day”. Indeed, child was sent home because he was so sick. Then, the same day child was sent home, parents sent their sick child to my place to play! The child gave his illness to my child and my child was VERY sick and missed three days of school. When I complained to parents, they made their son write an apology letter to my child! Many other children at the school got sick too.

2) They sent their child wearing a mask to school in September too. Coincidentally (not), my son got sick soon after.

3) Yesterday, they sent child to school wearing a mask and he vomited and had to be picked up. I’m just waiting for my child to get the stomach bug. The fact that parents sent child to school wearing a mask means that the parents knew their child was sick.

I’ve tried talking to the parents but they don’t want to miss their “important” jobs to stay home and care for their child.

So you have a problem with one child and how their parents handle illness. I would say the solution is pretty simple. Dont have play dates with that child. Second, you ask “why”. You seem to have come to a conclusion as to why this happens in your last sentence.

Things are complicated. We don’t know what goes on in other people’s lives. I wonder what would happen if you talk to them about this instead of posting on a message board.

So they learn the difference between "there" and "their" I suspect.

I have tried to talk to them about it but they refuse to acknowledge that they are doing anything wrong.

Not sure but my kid has a friend and I suspect the mother is abusive. She doesn’t let her kid socialize with anyone outside of school, is apparently very “strict” so the kid has to go to school even when very sick and has to “push through.” Unfortunately I’ve never met the woman but I have heard a lot of stories and I feel bad for the kid. Other than that, everyone I know keeps their kids home regarding the types of illnesses you described.

I think they are selfish and would rather other children get sick than actually have to stay home and care for their own sick child. I guess they also assume it is just fine for teachers to act as their child’s nurse and for a janitor to clean up their child’s vomit.

I have the work flex to work from home when my kid is so sick. If my kid is active with no fever/no pain/loss of appetite with just some coughing, sneezing or runny nose, I send them to school. If they keep coughing, I take them to sed doctor and stay home till feeling a bit better. Normally, pediatrician says no medication and let it run the course. Maybe other parents do not or cannot get excused from work or get sick days from work.

Because they care about their jobs or me time more than they care about their own kids.

Yeah, I'll send my kid to school with snot and a lingering cough, but this sounds like it's beyond that. Fever, diarrhea, or vomiting means staying home.

It is frustrating OP. GI bugs with vomiting or diarrhea or any time a kid has a fever are a hard no. You are not supposed to send a kid in with those. I feel so bad for the kids. They feel absolutely miserable and they have to go to school. They are probably embarrassed to vomit at school. These parents either have jobs where they feel they can't take time or they are abusive parents.

We should be fighting for a world where anyone who works can take sick time for sick kids. The current administration and useless Congress would never fight for something like that.

Because they think their time is more important than other people’s time!

OP here. This is not a marginalized family. This is an upper class family and parents work from home.

You should not have had kids

Why in the world do you think it is ok to infect others?

I don't care that you have to "work" don't have kids if you can not afford to keep them home when they are not feeling well.

As a working parent as well I absolutely understand you are a terrible parent.
