Honors English 12 vs DE vs AP Lit??

Anonymous
DD is taking AP Lang in 11th grade - doing fine with a B+ but not knocking it out of the park. Her other classes are very rigorous and she has As or A-s, maybe one B+ over the years, in those. She says English isn't her thing, but she also wants to go to a very selective college.

For next year, she wants to take Honors English 12 and take other subject classes that are more rigorous. I am pushing for at least DE because it is more "rigorous" but it also sounds complicated - either you take it off campus and need to figure that out (but get a free period during the day?) or take it at school. She says that kids say that the DE class offered at school is basically just AP Lit and really hard.

Does anyone have any more insight - both into the content of the classes and how it might be looked at by colleges? I have accepted that she won't take AP Lit but taking honors 12 seems like going down two levels when she isn't really struggling that much.

TIA.

What is DE?

Oh, Dual Enrollment. Don't expect that of her, very disruptive

Tell her to take AP Lit and you won't bother her about her grade after 1st semester

our Duel Enrollment is on campus like a regular class

My kid is in a similar situation. He's taken AP Sem, AP Research, and AP Lang. He's taking H.English 12 instead of AP Lit.

English isn't his thing. STEM is. He's got a full load of AP science courses. People don't expect top students to take all 3 AP sciences, why are kids expected to take both Lang and Lit? An evening DE class might work if you really want that.

What other classes is she planning to take? What will be her college major/career goal?

Having balance in your schedule is a good thing. I'd be inclined to go with 12 Honors

Just take AP. Doe she not remember how awful non AP was?

I have a senior now taking AP Lit. Most of her friends are in DE English. They have tons of long writing assignments. My kid says that her class is reading a lot outside of class, and all the writing assignments are done in class. Not sure if the teacher is making sure they don’t use AI tools.

AP Lit is so much easier than AP Lang. Just take it.

AP Lit is senior year. AP Lang is junior year. Right?

My DD agrees. Then, she likes to read a lot too.
