Cheating

Anonymous
Seeking DCUM wisdom, oxymoronic as that might be. How are your schools handling ChatGPT cheating? DC is at DMV private. Says that kids are not allowed to switch screens during tests but they fix that by having a dual screen set up. On large standard tests, think math or science contests, they aren’t monitored from behind and it’s super easy to cheat. DC has seen this firsthand. Would you report this? What is the line between honor code and the Sidwell disaster a few years ago? DC is very discouraged as many of these kids are suddenly getting strong grades on tests and they know it is not happening honestly.

why does the school give digital tests? our school only uses paper

Cheating is a problem in our NW private and I know it’s a problem at our friend’s Catholic school with both schools doing little to address it.

What happened at Sidwell?

Are these take home tests? Having a double screen go unnoticed in the classroom would be unusual.

My kid is required to use digiexam to lock down his computer during tests.

Paper tests.

By... Walking around behind them?

I don't know how you could have an additional screen and nobody notice. That's bizarre.

DC’s school uses Digiexam

Agreed! I must be missing something because this seems so obvious and easy to see.

Yeah, some kids are against the back wall and no one walks around them. DC has literally seen ChatGPT up. What happened at Sidwell was some parents complained about other kids in the school and were vilified in the press for it. It was seen as undermining to give their own kids a leg up in admissions. We aren’t there so don’t know details. But honestly if kids are regularly cheating for grades, I get it. That is super frustrating. Recently at DCs school a relatively poor student won a big award for a contest test. Known by other kids to use AI on tests and there was no monitor walking around. It’s stuff like that that really gets me going.

So my question is, can this be raised without a backlash like at Sidwell? Or chalk up to life lessons in unfairness and let it go? Again DC has indeed reported this before. Nothing changes.

What a weird failure by the school. Just don't let them sit against the wall FFS.

Right. So the question: do I say something?

I think this is very unfair. You absolutely should report this to the school and the teachers. AI could be very harmful in education.

Yes, absolutely. You pay the tuition to have a voice.

Yes. Cheating is hurting both the students who cheat and those who do not. It is also undermining the ultimate goals (and likely mission) of the school.
