60th birthday — what to do

Anonymous
My 60th birthday is coming up next year and I am trying to figure out how I’d like to mark it.

Could do something fun like host a big party (60-75 guests) in my backyard or at a venue.

Smaller gathering with a few family and friends

Girls’ trip somewhere

DH has also offered a trip to somewhere I’ve never been, in the US or abroad.

I don’t know what I want and I’m not sure how to narrow the choices. I have a summer birthday.

Money is an issue — we have some
Money but not tons to do huge “money is no object” trips and parties. We are saving for college and for retirement.

What did you do? What would you do?

I prefer intimate things so big party would be out. We've spent a couple milestone birthdays doing group trips with our close group of friends (about 10 of us) and that's always been fun.

Go on a trip with your husband. YOLO. Give me a budget and tell me where you’ve already been and what’s on your travel wish list, and dcum will offer suggestions.

You can still host friends and family for pizza and cake at your house around your actual birthday if you want. It’s easy to scale that and keep costs down.

My friend is turning 60 and 4 of us are going to Italy, no H's.

Since op said money is an issue, I would prioritize traveling with my husband rather than friends.

Not to state the obvious, but I cannot imagine being 60 years old and still having to save for college and for retirement.

You think you have the money to plan these things to fête yourself, but you kind of just said you actually don’t.

When did you even give birth, in your mid-40s?

For someone who is basically considering planning a small wedding for your birthday at your age, shouldn’t you already have healthy 529s for your children in the background?

If you are still “saving for college and retirement” then you don’t actually have the money you want to say you do for stupid stuff like “yay me” parties.

I went on a 2 week safari in East Africa and from there went to Brazil to see Eric Clapton in concert.

For my 40th, DH and I went to Venice. Just four days, there and back. It was magical.

I would do nothing because I hate my birthday. It sounds like you want it acknowledged. Why not go out to a nice dinner with DH and a friend? Special, but not crazy expensive.

what is your problem? I'm sure OP saved better than 90% of Americans, they're just not ultra rich.

You went to Brazil to see him? There are so many other more fun things to do while in Brazil.

This is just rude and unhelpful. They are handing out cookies in the Food forum, go ahead and grab one for yourself.

I go there frequently have have for almost 50 years. I went to celebrate my birthday with some friends there and it just happened he was playing a concert that weekend.
