Do admissions look at the parents or child more?

We are applying for our child and it feels like we are applying for this school, not our young child.

How much does parent education or job matter?

How much does parent education or job matter?

What grade?

Grade is important here. HS? Almost entirely the kid (I suppose a particularly egregious parent could tank the kid’s chances, yes). But for pre-k/k there’s really nothing to judge about the kid beyond very basic readiness, so the family is going to matter more. But probably not education/job so much as personality and fit.

+1 that grade matters.

For 3rd grade, I felt like it was a mix of both parents and kid. They want a kid that is smart (or at least at grade level) + parents that are nice and will be involved in whatever capacity.

A young child?

As long as the child behaves appropriately at the playdate and doesn’t have a diagnosis, the parents/family matter more. Are you full pay? Where did you go to college and/or grad school? Are you a legacy from that private? Where do you work? How much do you earn? Are you attractive? Do you seem like compliant (not PITA) people?

I think the last question is the most important, except maybe for legacy status.

I think for upper elementary or middle school, It is a combination of the family and the child.

We applied to go into kindergarten and it seemed like it was mostly us. In the higher grades, they look more to the child.

I thought it varied a lot by school (kindergarten). Most interrogated us. The school that paid the least attention to us and focused most on our kid is the one we chose.

12 years later, I can say we made the right choice.
