American public bathrooms are barbaric

I lived in london until late 20s and I cannot get used to the office/ public bathrooms here. Basically one large room with flimsy dividers where you are meant to pee and poop with colleagues in what is essentially a shared space? Insane. Why is this tolerated? So gross and awkward

I am European as well and this is a uniquely you thing. Everyone poops and pees. You have plenty of privacy.

I agree OP

I find the kind of bathrooms you are used to, to be claustrophobic (and who needs that echo?!) and like an upright coffin.

OP is from a higher social class in Europe.

In USA, OP will see higher class bathrooms in private country clubs.

I wish we had single stall bathrooms with a sink in them in professional settings. I also agree that European bathrooms are claustrophobic and can rarely be found. Your toilet paper sucks too.

As a kid our bathrooms didn't have actually doors in middle and high school. I feel like I've been constipated now for 20 years and it stems from that trauma. I think kids still often don't get doors because they were performing sex acts or doing drugs or smoking in bathrooms.

So high that she has to work in these "terrible" places in the US.

I've lived in France, the UK, Germany, Japan and lately, here in the US, and I have no idea what OP is whining about.

As long as it's clean, that's all I ask.

I remember as a child driving around in France in the 80s and finding the public toilets GROSS. But GROSS. Think: clogged toilet with feces overflowing on the floor. Also, few and far between.

Modern bathrooms now, whether they're in Europe, Asia or the US, are fine. Seriously. Even the traditional squat toilets left in some corners of Japan.

Clean is all you need.

Me again. I also went to boarding school in Scotland. OP is full of it. The bathrooms there were basic.

Even the pay toilets in Germany can be beyond disgusting.

I've never heard of "no doors" but near me it's common to lock some of the rooms so only part of the school's capacity is available.

I fully agree - also grew up in the UK. The toilets here are disgusting. I don't want to see my colleagues' pants bunched around their ankles when they poop, I don't want to see their heads when they stand up in the stalls, and I certainly don't want to make eye contact with them when they are on the shitter through the huge gap in the cubicle. It is beyond revolting. This is the richest country in the world - splash out on a few more inches of board for the walls and doors!

And don't even get me started on the Turkish toilets all over Eastern Europe.

Clearly you need to travel more. Spend some time in India, and you will be grateful for US public bathrooms.

At least we don't have to pay money to use a public bathroom.
