Your experience with UTI/kidney problems in an older cat

For those of you who have cats with kidney problems that did not respond well to antibiotics the first time, what choice of action did you choose after that?

I have a 15-year-old cat whose UTI did not respond well to the first round of injectable antibiotics/oral antibiotics and her kidney values have plummeted. She has not had any pee accidents since that round of antibiotics.

She only eats with the help of an appetite stimulant, but is drinking some. She still likes to sit in my lap, be brushed, but she isn’t interacting with her cat brother, or doing much else besides sleeping.

I have been given the option of a second round of antibiotics along with some anti-nausea medication to see if that will help her eat without the appetite stimulant. I am a quality of life cat parent.

For those of you who have gone through this, was the second round of antibiotics, helpful or did it just prolong the inevitable? I don’t want her to suffer.

I think the vet can do some lab work to see how her kidneys are functioning. That is what I recall happening for my cat and it gave me some guidance on best decision making.

You might try hydro care. It is a Purina product I think. It helped my cat hydrate when she was recovering from a UTI. She has kidney issues. When she got the infection she stopped drinking much. I also gave her any food she would eat while she was recovering. She liked lickables which don’t have many calories but do have a high water content.

Pp. we did use the anti nausea meds. Recovery took about two weeks.

I'm sorry. Once my cat's kidneys began to fail, he deteriorated pretty quickly and we chose to euthanize him.

+1 on the hydrocare product from purina. It gave her terrifically bad gas, but she really likes it and would drink that even when she wasn’t interested in food or water.

We did twice a week bolus injections for our cat with kidney issues and she continued to live a happy life for a long time.
