I understand it’s not considered that prestigious anymore even though it has a sub 15% admit rate?
Anyone’s kid applying? Deadline tonight |
|
I think it’s still very competitive and prestigious for international students.
For affluent domestic students, I don’t think it’s typically going to move the needle at any of the top colleges they’re targeting as it’s kind of pay to play. But it won’t hurt and might help at need aware schools or if you distinguish yourself at program. For a lower income student receiving financial aid, I’d definitely go for it. |
Interesting that a friend's kid reported its 50% US private HS kids |
| My DC participated (full pay) in the program a few years ago. Loved it. Is now at Yale, although I doubt that YYGS played any part in that outcome. |
What were their ECs? Just curious since my child would love to go to yale! |
NP: are you planning on copying? |
I was just curious if they are related to YYGS - but if you are not who I was asking, why don't you MYOB? |
Yeah cuz it’s $7K |
I wouldn’t trust this friend of a friend’s advice. My public school DC went last summer. DC’s suite had only one other US student. It was a great experience, and they are going to Yale next year. Only one suitemate is applying to Yale RD. The others ED’d at different ivies or have one more year of school left. That said, I’m confident the applications they brought to YYGS meant they were well prepared for their college applications even without this activity. The acceptance rate just means that you get to attend with peers who are equally as motivated to be there. |
| YYGS is neutral in terms of college application. It has become too commercial. AOs would not view it as negative nor positive. If your DC is interested in this program, then go. |
|
My DS did it 3 summers ago, loved the program but did not love New Haven. We were glad he had that knowledge going into applications- he is at a different Ivy.
One positive of applying to YYGS and other similar programs is it gives them a start on materials they will need for college apps, Ie resume, EC’s with descriptions of impact and some essay writing. It’s also competitive enough to give a sense of the process to come |
| My son's boarding school friend did it last summer and enjoyed it. Rejected from ED at T10. |
Then ask that: for students in a Yale and who did YYGS, were their other ECs related in some way to YYGS? Clearly, that’s not why you’re asking tho. |
Do you have a cite for this, OP? My DC participated in it years ago; loved it, and went to Oxford. FWIW I did google out of curiosity and it says “prestigious”. https://www.lumiere-education.com/post/yale-young-global-scholars-yygs-an-honest-review |
| What in the hell is a YYGS? |
