LAMB and Yu Ying to move to Walter Reed Campus

Anonymous
It is not completely a done deal, as the DC and Federal gov't need to sign off...but just FYI. We live a block from Walter Reed, already struck out on LAMB though

On October 6th, the Local Redevelopment Committee (LRA) approved a reuse plan for the reuse of the District's 62.5-acre site at Walter Reed Army Medical Center on Georgia Avenue. The plan includes 850 units of mixed-income housing, 200,000 square feet of retail, 90,000 square feet of office space, and 40 acres of open space-or 65 percent of the total site area. The plan calls for an open and inviting space that will serve the residents of Ward 4 and beyond with a vast array of housing, retail, educational, recreational, and healthcare options; over 3,200 new jobs, and $18 million in annual tax revenue!

The reuse plan also designates the non-profits and educational institutions that must be granted land per Army rules. For the homeless services component, Help USA along with Catholic Charities will provide 75 units of permanent housing for veterans and families, Transitional Housing Corporation will occupy 4,000 square feet of office space, and So Others Might Eat will provide 45 units of permanent supportive housing for families. Two charter schools-Latin American Montessori Bilingual and Washington Yu Ying-will share a building, D.C. Fire and Emergency Services will have space for Engine 22, and Howard University will have an ambulatory care facility (which may not include 24-hour emergency hospital services or a methadone treatment facility). The remaining site will be redeveloped for commercial uses including retail, apartments, senior housing, recreation, and more.

In the coming weeks the LRA and the District government will negotiate binding agreements with the site's chosen users and submit a bill approving the plan to the Council by December 7th. The Council will review the bill, hold a public hearing, and vote to approve the plan by February 1, 2011. The plan then goes to the federal government for review and final sign-off.

So Yu Ying would possibly get a location with outdoor space? I hope they sign off on the binding agreement. Even if this is a long way away it sounds like great news considering some of the other downtown locations they have been considering. Running around outside is not a luxury for little kids, it is a must!

great news, if it pans out!

Wow LAMB recently (last couple of years) had a big remodel, correct?
Anonymous
Yes, they did indeed have a huge remodel. I wonder what will happen to that beautiful building.

Why would LAMB move? That doesn't really make sense, unless they use the old location for an upper school.

I believe LAMB will retain their building for the lower classes. Each year they add a class. The school currently has classes from PS to 6th grade.

I thought you were talking about Designer boutiques.

Is this move really going to happen? Yu Ying is moving for SY 11-12 to a building on Taylor street. What is the likelihood of them moving to Walter Reed?

Yu Ying is not moving to Walt Reed. Lamb will.

The latest I heard from LAMB is that they are not expanding to upper grades and are actually stopping at 5th.

Thx PP-do you know when the move will take place? Are they going to keep their location on Missouri ave after the move? I'm also trying to gauge how long they will be @ the Brookland location.

YY will eventually outgrow the Taylor St. campus. It will always be a YY school, but probably just the lower school. The Walter Reed site looks good for the upper school and is definitely in consideration for that. Since the Taylor St. campus will hold the school for now, there are a few years to go before the 2nd site becomes urgent.

Wrong. Stick to what you know about LAMB, please. You are clearly not a YY parent, so don't speculate. YY was awarded a building at Walter Reed and is very interested in it for the upper school.
