Any details on this horrifying report:
https://robertdyer.blogspot.com/2026/01/strong-arm-rape-reported-at-library-in.html I take my kids there all the time! |
| Wow. They need to stop letting libraries double as homeless shelters. |
Is that what the situation is?? |
| Yikes. It felt so safe letting my teen DD go there by herself. |
My friend works at a library and no one in the library itself is "letting" libraries become homeless shelters, it's that all other aspects of public aid have been cut so libraries end up as a catch all for the public who comes looking for help. It isn't just the homeless but also all sorts of social issues. |
| Robert Dyer's tabloid article doesn't mention anything about homeless persons, let's not make that leap. Do better |
|
As a former librarian, I can assure you that the general public does come into libraries, and that includes sexual offenders. They will also get banned, but usually have to do something first.
Surprisingly, to me at the time, most of the sexual offenders aren't homeless. |
It's probably fine. She just needs to stay in an open area or stay near the librarians / staff. Don't find a little corner to hide in, or go into the restrooms if someone is making you uncomfortable. Instead, go right near the staff and let them know what is going on. |
The pp's on this thread made that connection and I was responding to it I was making the point that most sexual offenders*aren't* homeless. |
True nobody in their right mind would think a homeless person might have a higher than average rate of being a sex offender!! https://ciceroinstitute.org/research/sex-offenders-an-overlooked-but-significant-subpopulation-of-the-homeless/ |
But we keep pouring more and more money into 501(c)3s dedicated to help the homeless. |
| I’d wager that Dyer trolls the MoCo Data Portal / Police-Dispatched Incidents site - https://data.montgomerycountymd.gov/Public-Safety/Police-Dispatched-Incidents/98cc-bc7d/about_data - for these tidbits, that he then turns onto blog content. Point is that no one can make any assumptions based on the basic information the county site provides. For all we know it could have been a married couple where one assaulted the other. I wouldn’t go so far as to be alarmed for the safety of library patrons, whether male, female, young, old, or somewhere in between. |
| I wonder if the assault actually occurred outside the library but the victim went inside for help? |
|
When my daughter was young, the librarian at another lower Montgomery County Library warned me to accompany my child into the bathroom. Apparently they knew there was an assailant in the system, but he had not been caught.
I was grateful to her. |
| I’m sure this will come off as harsh and my sample size is small but I haven’t been around any homeless men I’d feel comfortable leaving my wife and daughter anywhere near by themselves. There are exceptions and I am no expert but there are generally mental health/substance issues. |
