Discarded toys at playgrounds in NW DC

Anonymous
We've noticed recently that several local playgrounds in NW DC (Lafayette, Chevy Chase, Forest Hills) are littered with used toys, such as Fisher Price play sets and bike/car push toys. These toys are often dirty, worn out, and generally in various states of disrepair. Some appear unsafe. For instance, today we saw a broken school bus toy that had a large exposed screw. We've also seen toys missing wheels or with broken handles. I'm curious if there is any community consensus on keeping these toys at the parks. As is probably obvious, I don't like it (although I can acknowledge that the kids seem to like these toys). I'm also not sure if the district (or another entity) removes them annually or something like that. Really just trying to get a feel for people's thoughts. Would there be interest in cleaning up the playgrounds and trashing these toys?

The kids seem to love these toys.

I'm in the suburbs near a park that was a known toy graveyard. I think people brought the toys with good intentions - perhaps some were even new when first placed - but after several years they became trash and at some point the city had to come haul them all away. I suspect the immediate neighbors did some coordination to get the city involved, and to keep toys from reappearing, but it was the city that removed them.

I'd start with the city. If they seem unlikely to help, then I'd try a neighborhood listserv.
Also, if a toy is really unsafe (and not just dirty, which happens and is fine) then you should place it by the park trash can with a sign that says broken / unsafe to use.

Personally, I would throw out the ones with sharp screws exposed or that could otherwise hurt someone.

We have this issue at our playground that is part of my condo association. I throw things out as they get broken and worn. I usually try to check in with other parents if possible. We contribute toys as well so dont think its bad to through them away. Im afraid someone will complain if it gets too junky out there.

Don’t call the city.

Throw out the damaged/dangerous ones and let the other ones be.
