I like Timothee and think he carried this film, and I enjoyed it stylistically, but the story was a bit rambling (they could have cut a good 40 min from the film).
Also, I expected more from the over-the-top "orange" promotion and the overall hype. Was that Ryan Reynolds' marketing company? I guess the studios used to do heavy marketing pushes not too long ago also, but I miss the days of sleeper hits. I feel really old. |
It’s overrated. And too long. Most of the characters were annoying though I enjoyed seeing Fran Drescher and Penn Jillette in different types of roles.
What is it about?
I enjoyed it. My teens and I went on Christmas, having no idea what it was about. We liked the twists and turns.
Boring, bad, totally overrated. Not compelling. And I love all the other safdie bros movies
It’s loosely based on a ping pong/table tennis champion from the 1950s who was sort of scrappy and arrogant, as he makes his way to the championship in Japan (with lots of detours along the way).
I loved it. Could lose 30 minutes but thought Chamalet did a great job.
It pushed better movies out of the theater which makes me salty.
Maybe it’s good, but I am so turned off by Chalamet I can’t bare to watch him in this.
Loved the 80’s music set to a 50’s story (great needle drops throughout) but it was a bit overhyped. We went on Christmas Day and had fun.
Chalamet is insufferable. Not even worth streaming
So you think this rates below Uncut Gems and Good Time? |
Agree! I saw it and didn't get all of the hype about it. |
I love TC and he was fantastic. I had no idea about the hype so I had no expectations on what to expect. I wouldn't have enjoyed anywhere but the theaters because of the length (just too easily distracted) but it was a fun watch.
Hated it. Not worthy of the hype. The trailer was completely misleading. The plot was insane and overlong with multiple side adventures that should have been cut. TC's character was a narcissist and impossible to root for given all his bad acts.
