Trying to decide on outside cameras. And if Blink - subscription or no plan? Or some other outdoor camera?
We live in DC on a busy corner if that matters. |
| I'm keeping an eye on this thread. I also live in DC, although not on a busy corner. But I need to put up some outdoor cameras too. |

I do not know anything about Blink, but I would dig deeply into their terms of service and privacy policy.
For Ring, read the terms of service very carefully, especially the small print, Basically any data the camera sees belongs to them, not to you. And their privacy policy basically says you do not have any privacy. It also says that both ToS and PP can be changed at any time. Not saying don’t do it, but I am saying do understand exactly what you will and won’t get… |
I'm keeping an eye on this as well, although I'm out in the boonies in VA. |
| I've been happy with my UniFi Protect camera, I've had it about four months. No subscription, no fees, the purchase covers everything forever. |
| Blink needs a plan and battery life sucks. |
I don't want Ring for this reason. What is a brand of camera that doesn't do this? |
|
All the companies are training their models on your data one way or another, don’t fool yourself.
I was planning on going with a whole new Uniform network to partially mitigate this, switch, dream Machine, and unifi PoE cams and on premises recording/storage but that never materialized. We went with google doorbell, floodlight and wired cams because of reviews, capabilities, seamless integration, and cost. They are lacking on 4k or similar but we found that it meets our needs and can always upgrade. |
If one gets a separate home camera system — no subscription, no Internet access — it won’t be doing this. Costco sells them sometimes. They do not solve the “I want my smart phone ket me look out my door while I am away” goal, for those that want that. |
| Eufy. Local storage, no subscriptions. |
I have Blink and just record to a jump drive. No monthly plan . But yes, battery life isn't great. Connecting to a solar panel helps with that. |
|
I have one of the original Arlo systems that's "free." It's good enough to check for package deliveries, screen visitors, and watch the wildlife in my backyard.
I am going to replace it in a year or two since the cameras are finally dying. I don't want a monthly plan, and I might just buy whatever Costco sells that matches that criteria. |
Same! Which ones don't own YOU? All these things are scams for your information, face, data these days. They're sold under the guise of convenience. |
| When we have visitors and sit on our front porch, we turn off the camera. otherwise it would sit there and record all of your conversations |
| +1 to Eufy! They have some great solar powered cameras. Love mine. Costco has sales. |
