Tapping into 529: the nitty gritty steps

Anonymous
Had to stop DH from paying the enrollment deposit until after 1/1. Had to remind him we can start tapping into 529 for DC starting 2026. Hooray!

Let’s assume tuition/board is 90K for the 2026-2027 academic year. Can only half of that be withdrawn in 2026 (for fall semester)?

Can I move 45K lump sum from 529 to checking now in anticipation of making tuition payments later in the spring?

What do most people do? Pay schools directly from checking account, then reimburse oneself from the 529 after each expense vs make payments directly from the 529 account?

Thanks for any advice. Worried about making a mistake.

When we receive a bill, we transfer the funds from our 529 to our checking account, then use that to pay the bill. We have 30 days to pay the bill, and it only takes one business day to transfer the funds to our checking account, so there's plenty of time.

We pay UMD directly from our Virginia Savings Plan after receiving bill. Only takes a few days.

We pay college directly from 529 at least two weeks before bill due but it takes only a few days to fully transfer.

I was hoping to transfer to my kid's checking account as he is an independent from me.
His January bill is only $6600 and September may be ca $6000. I thought about selling the growth fund, transferring $12k and be done with it for 2026.

When we were using up the Coverdell ESA, we wrote a check to the college and then reimbursed ourselves from the Coverdell. Now that the Coverdell is empty we send a request to the 529 to send a check to the college which does not accept electronic transfers at this point. Child is at a private small liberal arts college. We pay the spring semester in the fall and there’s a box that the college checks to let the government know that payment was for the following year. I did do a fair amount of research into the AOTC and lifetime learning credit so I understood how to maximize those in our particular tax situation. We are also continuing to contribute since our child is interested in a professional or graduate program post college.

Live in MD, have the kids 529s pay their colleges directly, both out of state, one private one public.

I just pay all the college costs and living expenses directly, then at the end of the year transfer the maximum allowable amount from the 529 to my savings account.

Pay university directly from 529.

I don’t think there are many rules around this or anyone is really checking unless you’re audited.

Use the 529 funds to pay expenses. Don’t over complicate it.

seems like its quite easy to use up some of the 529 plans to cover other expenses like travel for kids - even though that is not covered by 529.

No one is really checking.

Why is there a year delay before you are allowed to use the 529?

We prefer to have payments sent directly from the 529 to the school. My older kid lived on campus all four years and my freshman currently does, so it’s easier this way. Obviously we will revisit when we need to reimburse ourselves for off campus housing costs (which will happen as #2s school has no options for juniors and seniors who are not RAs).
