Is it best to remain quiet about using a private counselor whenever DC meets with their FCPS HS counselor? I personally see no benefit to disclosing this detail with so much emphasis on equity and demonization of those with financial privilege. I certainly didn't - nor wouldn't - disclose the prior purchase of prep classes and tutors for PSAT, SAT, AP, etc.
Any alternative views here? |
| I don’t know about your kid and school, but mine met once with their public school counselor. It wouldn’t have made any difference if they talked about a private college counselor or not. |
| No one cares. Really. |

This doesn’t matter.
Professional school counselors don’t feel competition with IECs. They have a caseload of students with a range of needs to work with. |
|
Private school counselors care about this the most. They are heavily steering kids so need to know if there is an independent counselor suggesting something different from their steering. Even that, you don't need to disclose the existence (not to mention the contact info) of outside counselor. If parents are savy enough, they can step in to meet with the school counselor. 99 out of 100 school counselor gets their ways.
Donors are different. They need to coordinate. |
| Doesn't matter. Oh and the high school counselors have seen it all. |
| Doesn't make a difference |
| They don’t care. |
| Private school counselors care a lot. Public don't. |
| They’ll be relieved. They can’t help everyone so if you have a private counselor to inquiry with your questions, it lightens their load. Just make sure it’s a reputable one, as there are many who give bad advice. |
| I would not disclose. |
| I wouldn't think it would even need to come up with a HS counselor, honestly. I don't know they have the capacity to get into the weeds the way a private counselor would, so I wouldn't even worry about it. |

Public high school counselors are busy since they have hundreds of students to deal with. I'm sure they'd be very happy if some students had private college counselors.
But I wouldn't say anything. Think of it as bonus advice. |

Equity demands all you privileged parents just stop with the ridiculous spending on independent consultants.
Just stop. |
| Private school counselors work very closely with you and the. Hild. It only benefits everyone to coordinate. |
