Boys JV Volleyball

I heard a rumor that there might be a boys' JV volleyball squad next year and they might move boys' volleyball to the spring to create room for a JV schedule.

I am not sure how I feel about this.

The one thing I like about the fall season is that it has minimal interference with academics.
The Spring season playoffs will interfere with finals won't it?

In Montgomery County, it's girls volleyball in the fall, and boys and coed in the spring.

In Montgomery County, they keep saying they're going to get rid of Coed and do JV Boys instead, but maybe they're trying to ramp up interest before they do that. I know that some schools are building up their boys and coed benches every year to get ready for JV Boys whenever the switch is made. DD played coed her freshman year thinking she didn't want to miss out if it's the last year they did it, but she's a junior now and sounds like they're still having Coed this year.

Is there even a postseason for JV sports? I haven't seen any JV postseason play in FCPS, but admittedly I'm not following every sport. With no postseason, I think any impact on finals would be minimal.

Plenty of athletes manage this successful across dozens of sports. Your kid will survive and so will you.

I don't think OP is worried about survival here. I assume that the OP wants to understand the process and stay ahead of the curve, rather than wait and see what happens without having a plan. Your snarky comment doesn't really help move the conversation forward. If that's the only thing you can contribute to the discussion, just know that it is not helpful.

It might have been a tad snarky, but the question about finals timing on top of sports is odd. Basketball and hockey kids have always had this issue vs midterms. Baseball, track, and soccer kids have always had this issue in the spring.

“The plan” is as easy as believing it is doable to manage both (it is!), and then you back out studying earlier and around your team schedule.

OP here.

I am not saying it is a unique problem but fall sports fit really well into the FCPS exam schedule. The other two seasons, not so much. FCPS desperately need boys JV volleyball but if I'm being selfish for my kid's experience, it seems like fall would be better for his grades.

For boys club volleyball players, a spring HS season is better. Much of the rest of the country plays a spring HS season (and it's a spring sport at college), so there are lots of tournaments in the fall and winter. Those clubs in VA often miss several big tournaments bc of the conflict with HS. In FCPS, boys volleyball has practice or a game every weekday evening, which makes it almost impossible for those kids to practice with their club teams. Then in the spring, there are very few tournaments until May, but the VA kids now practice all the time with the club and want to play in tournaments!

Compare this to girls volleyball - it's a fall sport everywhere and the club program is designed around that. Tryouts are at the very end of the HS season, and the tournaments don't get underway in earnest until December.
