My mom threw a wrench in my Christmas day menu

Anonymous
She very generously offered (insisted) on bringing the main dish, prime rib. I planned all the sides around that. She just told me she decided to bring ham instead. I have a lot of sides (5), maybe 2 go with ham.

Should I (a) get a red meat and also have that, or (b) just say who cares.

12 people, all family, no one is too picky or high maintenance. Everyone is fine w/ ham, we've had it before on Christmas. I just would have planned different sides around ham. I don't want to consider redoing all the sides at this point, we will waste too much food.

I'm having trouble imagining side dishes that go with rib but don't go with ham. Are they not all veggies? Did you have ham/bacon/pork in your side dishes?

Can you say what sides you have?

I would not plan all new sides but maybe tweak some of the flavors and/or style of cooking. Try that depending on what you planned.

And only if you have the capacity to. Otherwise I would not worry about.

Anything that goes with prime rib will be fine with ham. Don't overthink it.

Just get a bucket of fried chicken from KFC. Done.

+1. Especially since it is just family and no one is overly picky.

Yes, I should have listed the sides!
- Creamed spinach
- Mashed potatoes
- Roasted carrots (I think OK w ham)
- Roasted green beans (I think OK w ham)
- Burgundy mushrooms (I think NOT OK w ham)
- Rolls (parkerhouse style)

I think I would have done scalloped instead of mashed potatoes and probably something other than creamed spinach. The mushrooms w the ham just does not sound right, though. Which is what I was most looking forward to

I don’t know what sides you have but especially since all guests are family, I wouldn’t go get red meat to deal with or change your sides.

Don’t create more work and stress for yourself. Enjoy the time with your family and don’t give it a second thought.

Amazing what problems people will create for themselves when they don't have real ones.

Can you plan a meal over the next several days with beef as the protein so you can enjoy the mushrooms?

Switch the burgundy mushrooms with either mac & cheese or corn pudding. Both are super easy.

This has to be a troll post. No way a real person worries about some side dishes for prime rib versus ham.

Troll grade C-.

You're.
So.
Odd.

Mushrooms go with everything. What's the difference between scalloped and mashed when it comes to meat? Seriously, I've cooked all that stuff for years. One set of sides doesn't particularly go with one meat type.

Go and enjoy your Holiday, OP, instead of worrying about things that truly don't matter.
