Were there ever white chocolate chips?

Anonymous
I could swear we used to be able to buy bags of actual white chocolate chips.
Now all the ones I can find are “white baking chips” with no cocoa butter at all.

Was it always like this and I’m remembering something that was never real?

There's no chocolate chocolate chips anymore really

Are you thinking of butterscotch chips?

White chocolate, ie, cocoa butter without cocoa solids, exists and you should be able to find some. However, the whole chocolate trade is affected by tariffs. Guittard and Callebaut are brands that produce real white chocolate, but often for the trade - you can order them on Amazon. The stuff in supermarkets is often the low end with first ingredients sugar and palm oil, and cocoa butter somewhere at the end.

You probably just remember buying white baking chips labeled as white chocolate chips before they tightened up the food labeling laws.

Here is one: https://www.choczero.com/products/keto-white-chocolate

Putting "white chocolate" label on oil products was banned in 2004 in USA. That's why "white chocolate" it's hard to find now.

I thought white chocolate has no cocoa in it.

Yes. There were also the white chocolate chunks. Can’t remember the last time I saw them though!

It has cocoa butter but no cocoa solids.

They won’t have it at the grocery store. You can order callebaut callets on Amazon. At the grocery store, your best bet would be the bar section, not the baking aisle. But I doubt they’d have plain white chocolate.

Oh in case this is urgent, Whole Foods sometimes has Vahlrona feves (wafers, bigger than chips) decanted into little clear tubs over by the cheese. They might have white and you could just break those up for cookies or whatever.
