| I think my kid would be good at dance--he's willing to try a class if I can find a boys-only class. |
| Few there are places he won’t be the only boy |
| In Russia probably yes. Here probably not. |
| Maryland Youth Ballet has had classes for just boys in the past and I think they may still do it. There are also a few older boys in MYB higher level classes. |
|
I take my girls to Ballet Nova and there are boys only classes.
I actually didn’t think it was unusual at all. |
| Yes, they exist in NYC. MYB somwtimes has them but they come with all the problems if MYB. |
| Also at BalletNova - they have boys only classes. How old is your son?? I think the boys class starts at 6 or 7ish so if he’s younger he might need to do the coed pre-ballet to start off with. |
| Metropolitan Ballet Theatre in Gaithersburg also has boys only classes but they are a supplement to the regular curriculum in which they mix with the girls. Having grown up dancing with my brother I can tell you the best approach is simply not to talk about ballet at all. Just drop him off and pick him up and after age 13 or so he will decide if he wants to tell anyone. |
| OP here. Thanks for the responses. FWIW, I'm in Bethesda. I looked around at some sites and see that just taking a single weekly class is not the norm. I'm not looking to go all-in. The whole point is just to try things. He is 11. |
| OP I have had the same issue and the most “boy coded” dance place I could find locally was this one in Takoma Park: https://www.all10breaking.com/ I have a former colleague whose son enjoyed this studio up into the teen years. We never tried it because it would have been too much effort to get there around our other activities, though. I thought about just hiring an instructor and getting my son’s friends to sign up for a boys only class in a school gym but haven’t yet gotten organized enough to actually do it. If you do let me know! |
| Ballet NOVA has weekly co-ed classes in their youth enrichment program, but the boys class is in the pre-professional program, which is for students experienced in ballet and willing to go several times a week. |
| At 11, if hes just trying, go with where ever is closest - even if its just 1 or 2 other boys in the class. Lots of options in/near Bethesda |
Berwyn Ballet offers classes for 8+ boys. https://www.berwynballetschool.com/fallandspringclasses |
Could you expand on the problems at myb? |
