What are your thoughts on the Poe MS AAP proposal?

Every MS should have AAP. There are enough kids identified for AAP in the ES that feed into the MS that every MS should have enough kids for an AAP program.

That isn’t the case, however, with the new Poe MS AAP center. It’s intended to serve primarily as the AAP center for the Annandale pyramid and will also get kids from Holmes MS.

It’s a good idea but they need to make sure the AAP assignments align with whatever they end up doing in the Justice pyramid, which may send Glasgow kids to Poe and Holmes.

I think the vision for this center is to relieve overcrowding at Glasgow by moving AAP students to Poe.

Controversially, I think Bren Mar Park should be made a K-6 school and rezoned to Twain, Holmes close, and Poe become the main middle school for the Annandale pyramid, with an in house AAP center as PP states that all Middle Schools should have AAP.

In part, but the vision was also to create a MS AAP center in the Annandale pyramid. There are also areas that were zoned for AAP at Frost in the Woodson pyramid that will go to Poe for AAP in the future.

They’ve made it clear they aren’t going to do anything with Bren Mar Park until the next boundary review in five years. And there’s no way they are closing Holmes. It would make Poe much bigger and Ricardy Anderson has made downsizing Glasgow her top priority for years. The last thing they’d want to do is recreate the same dynamic at Poe.

I meant that Bren Mar Park be converted to Twain and Edison, and Poe or Holmes become the anchor middle school for the Annandale pyramid.

Bren Mar Park already goes to Edison. Pull it out of Holmes and Holmes is woefully under capacity.

Holmes used to be the anchor middle school for Jefferson before it was TJHSST and Poe was the anchor middle school for Annandale. Poe currently splits to Annandale and Falls Church and Holmes splits to Annandale and Edison. I don't see how they won't stay split feeders for years, since the schools themselves are in neighborhoods that feed to Annandale.

Also, FCPS staff just floated a proposal that would increase the number of Falls Church-bound kids at Poe and which could turn Holmes into a three-way split feeder to Annandale, Edison, and Justice, unless they move the Glasgow kids they propose to move to Holmes from Justice to Annandale as well.
