Ethnic background

I can’t get this out of my head. If you are in a group at work and everyone starts discussing ethnic background and there are Black, Hispanic, Asian and White folks… what is it that should or should not be said? I don’t get everyone’s fascination with this subject!

If you're white keep your mouth shut. Not worth the risk.

I have a very ethnic last name, but appear quite different to those who don't know because I take after my mom. Sometimes it's just easier to make that clear right off the bat. It's really just another form of small talk, although I can't really give you a reason why this comes up so often.

I’d walk away from that conversation in a work environment.

This is why Trump got elected. Twice.

How is it not interesting how people grew up?
They probably talking about their childhoods.
I grew up with hole in shoes, but I did have 30 horses I could ride for free daily.
I grew up with freshly cooked organic food, but didn't have a banana until I was 13.

I’m confused about your confusion OP. Every white person seems to know if they are German, Scots-Irish, Italian, Polish, etc descent in my experience for example.

+1. Absolutely not worth the risk.

You walk out of the room and say nothing. This is not appropriate work talk.

You're calling other people stupid but you can't even write a proper sentence.

I'm multi-ethnic and insert that categorizing people in ethnic groups is discriminating to people like me. That usually shuts everyone up!

Whatever you decide to say, please don’t be that colleague who starts boasting about being of a certain ethnicity just because s/he has a 0.9 percent of a certain ethnic background in 23andme results

I’m multi-ethnic (South Asian, Black, White) and I do not get this. Everyone can be categorized. Phenotypically Barack Obama will always be categorized as a black man and Stephen Graham will be categorized as a white man. It’s simply how the world is setup. In discussion their true roots come out but upon first glance people will see your outward appearance and determine your placement. If they were criminals caught stealing your car outside of your house, no one is looking at either of these men and saying “a biracial man stole my car”. It would be a black man (BO) or a white man (SG).
