| DD at DMV private. Loves STEM, top student. Also loves humanities. However, History at this school is a massive amount of time that she would much rather spend on math or ECs and she is thinking about dropping history as a senior next year and doubling up in STEM. College thoughts are T10, but possibly some top LACs too. Not sure her counselors will be totally honest here—they are very into balance and mental health. I think it’s a bad idea. What does DCUM say? Any college counselors out there who can advise? |
| Sounds like my DS, who is taking AP Econ as his history. It’s at least easy. Is that an option? |
| What does the counselor say? |
| Most colleges tend to look for well-rounded students for undergrad. |
| I would recommend a fourth year of some kind of history/social science/humanities class. DC is taking AP art history. |
| ^adding, the top colleges seem to like to see four years of all the core subjects. |
| There are no AP classes. Will do English of course and language, then either 2 maths amd and a science or 2 sciences and a math. Counselor says doesn’t matter but I am not sure I believe that… |
So you are paying a sh!!t-ton of money for your CCO and then asking anonymous strangers on the internet for advice? |
| DD dos this-only issue is she has a very tough year. |
My kid dropped history and doubled up on Science senior year. He is at a top SLAC now. |
| I think she should double down on what she is passionate about if that is what she is good at. College’s should see the narrative there. |
| Ok. 2 helpful posts in a row, will call it a day. Thx |
This. DD doubled up on STEM senior year versus another history. Overall level of rigor remained high. |
So the people who posted what you wanted to hear were helpful, and the people who have the opposite opinion are unhelpful. Got it. OP, there are students who have dropped a subject and doubled up on their preferred subject and successfully gotten into top 10s, and students who have done the same thing and been shut out. There are students who have scrupulously taken all five core subjects for all four years rather than taken their preferred subject, who have been shut out and regretful. There are no guarantees. |

PP, snark was unnecessary. Not asking for a guarantee, and i understand confirmation bias better than most. . Two examples of “yes, this is possible” are sufficient. I am looking for possibility, not for certainty.
