ICE detention center staff explain how they forbid any communication between detainees and outside world. Communication requires a family member or attorney to obtain an "A number" which is impossible to obtain. This is absolutely savagery. |
| They took the risk, they knew the consequences. What’s changed? |
You really need to stop lying. A lot of detainees were always legal. I spoke to an immigration lawyer who told me that most cases she gets are people getting grabbed off the street on false pretenses on their way to work, or people from communities that have been specifically targeted by Trump (ex: Iranians) and that her work is mostly getting to the first hearing in front of a judge and explaining the law and then they get released. Sounds simple right? Except that in the intervening time... detainees may be imprisoned FOR MONTHS in cells without medication, medical care, beds, adequate clothing or toileting aids, in climate conditions that are hard to bear; and as OP said, that detainees are not given legally-required access to getting the representation they need to prove that they are legal and have always been legal to stay in the USA. If someone is legal but isn't allowed to call a lawyer and transfer money to pay said lawyer in time before you get summarily deported in defiance of all immigration laws... don't you think it's extremely unfair? I speak with feeling because I am a foreigner too, and I've always been legally allowed to stay in the US. I know this will not stop a determined ICE from detaining me if they want to. It's just a lottery. What's happening right now in the USA is a cruel xenophobic ouster of foreigners, and you, PP, shouldn't try to feel better about it by pretending to yourself that only the bad guys get the boot. |
| This is so shameful. I am disgusted. So much for American values or being a country people use to admire. |
| I don't know why people think it's abnormal for a nation to deport people in country illegally. Other countries do not tolerate illegal stays. I went to a middle eastern country once without a proper visa (there was a mix up). They told me that if I wasn't gone in 10 days, I needed to report to a police station. And I respected their laws and was grateful they let me in at all. Why do Americans expect that we will operate without any immigration enforcement? No country does that. |
How would you have felt if instead of sending you on your way, they detained you incommunicado, shackled to you to chairs for 23 hours a day, and fed you 1-2 granola bars for two weeks? Would you say they were justified? |
They deported a Purple Heart recipient who took two bullets for the US. You're right. These people took a risk to help the US and chose wrong. No one should help the US win their wars if this is how they will be treated. |
Stop gaslighting. No one thinks "it's abnormal for a nation to deport people in country illegally." No one. We think it is HORRIFIC and anti-American for this country to violate people's human rights. We think it is appalling that DHS and the administration would flat-out lie time and again about how they are going after the "worst of the worst" and then focus on the easiest targets: over 90% with no violent crime (below the stats for US citizens). We think it is barbaric that our government would arm and mask thugs, empowering them to emulate the Gestapo. |
I think the nice part will be when the people working in these facilities are on the other side of the bars where they belong. |
