New Year’s Resolution Done With Empathy and Will Live by the Rules American Culture Rewards

Anonymous
For years I led with empathy. I assumed good intent, made exceptions, bent rules, and absorbed losses because I believed being fair and human mattered. What I have learned the hard way is that empathy is rarely returned. It is extracted. And when I am on the other side asking for the same grace I have given, it disappears.

We let guests move trips when there was no snow. When it happened to us, no flexibility. We worked with guests when storms made travel unsafe. When we asked for the same, we were denied. Guests thanked us, told us accidents were just accidents, then hired attorneys and sued anyway. This year it became blatant. People lying to try to get refunds, unable to provide proof, then leaving bad reviews when we did not pay them off.

The same pattern showed up everywhere. Employees I promoted and paid well trashing me behind my back. A nanny double charging while on the clock. Realtors misrepresenting properties and concealing issues they clearly knew about. Again and again, kindness met extraction.

So this has changed me. I am done being the nice one who absorbs losses out of principle. I am done holding myself to a standard others exploit. Maybe this is just where American culture is now. More dog eat dog. People tighter with money and quicker to take. Either way, I am no longer pretending empathy is rewarded. From now on it is clear rules, firm boundaries, and no exceptions I would not be granted myself. I will protect my interests and stop continually getting screwed. Being nice has cost me enough. That is my New Year’s resolution.

What I keep wondering is whether this is actually the path to extreme wealth. When I add up all the situations where I led with empathy, did not push back, did not sue, and did not extract leverage, could that have realistically meant an extra hundred thousand a year over time. Not overnight riches, but materially different outcomes by simply playing the game the way others do.

I am genuinely curious what others think. Have things changed recently? Is this just the modern grind for money, or a broader shift in attitudes and behavior?

So sick of people not living by the rule,

Live simply, so others can simply live!

I try to live by the golden rule, treat others as I want to be treated. Do I always succeed? No, but I do my best, and most days I succeed.

I will never become an evil, soul sucking a$$ like the kind you are trying to become. Stick with civility, and don't let others drag you down

If you're doing things expecting other people to repay you, you were never actually nice to begin with.

At the end of the day I have to live with myself. Some things other people do that are slimy get them ahead. But I would not like who I was if I did them too. You still need to look in the mirror every day.
