Binghamton

Binghamton awarded our daughter a substantial scholarship as well as inviting her to join the first-year immersion research program. Does anyone have experience with the school?

I know someone whose child is there and having a great first year experience! Bing is a really solid school and seems to be rising.

Congratulations! A substantial scholarship is something to celebrate. It is life changing in terms of eliminating substantial debt and allowing your daughter freedom. I don't have direct experience but it looks like a solid school as part of the SUNY system. What does she want to study?

Yes and yes. That's a great offer. Binghamton is one of the most prestigious SUNY schools, and SUNY is a good system.

I've known two kids who did that research program. They're brilliant and jumped right in to doing really good work.

You should go visit. It's not the prettiest place, but it's really good academically, and well respected by grad schools.

+1 I grew up in NY and people referred to Binghamton as the "public Ivy." It doesn't seem to get as much attention on this DMV board, but it's certainly a strong public option.

To the general public, Binghamton is by no means a "public ivy." Solid school though.

What's your source of information as to what the "general public" thinks?

I know a bunch of SUNY Binghamton grads and they're all doing well, but I've never met an alum who was not a NYer. I am not sure what the experience is like for an OOS student.

They get a LOT of snow and it’s very cold and dreary.

I think that's pretty typical of state schools. I didn't meet any University of Maryland grads until I moved to Maryland.

The best SUNY, aside from Stony Brook and Buffalo.

We visited, and I didn't think the campus or area were as bad as people say. It’s a great school, strong outcomes for grads and strong alumni network. I’m originally from NYC and Binghamton was always the SUNY that top students might actually go to. Not a rising start, it’s been solid for a long while. I don’t think it’s the right fit for my kid (he wants smaller), but otherwise I would happily send my kid there and save the money.

Bing is probably the best of the 3 overall. I would choose Buffalo for engineering or management and Stony Brook for Math but Bing for anything else.

It's considered one of the top SUNY research universities. Good education at a good price, although not sure of OOS costs (I'm from the region). It's definitely a dreary city, but cheap, at least.
