How Insane Is Getting into Duke?

Looking at Reddit, so many kids with 1550+ getting rejected or deferred ED. What are they looking for?

It’s Duke, it’s going to look like a bloodbath every year. But also, test scores are just one factor

I honestly don’t think test scores matter very much once 1520 or so is reached.

They look for legacies - at our HS, that's who gets in year after year

From our high school, two kids with double/triple legacies are deferred.

Yes-Duke ED admit has a sibling there

At least two kids at WL got in.

My daughter's friend is a legacy and top student in a elite private school. Still haven't heard anything yet, which tells me it might be bad news.

Legacies I think. At least in ED. I work at a boarding school and the students accepted in ED are not in the top of the class and their baby photos on the decisions page are always them as a toddler in Duke gear.

There are more kids with those scores than there are seats. That’s just the way it is. It’s the same at UVA (but with lower scores.) There are more kids in VA who have the criteria for UVA than there are seats at UVA, hence why it feels like a random lotto.

It’s one if the few T10s that is still test optional. That is what makes it hard. Even more kids who don’t have to submit scores are choosing it over the others that are back to test required, just like Vandy. Both want their athletes so they won’t budge on TO.

They ain’t serious.

Please UVA is not in the same zip code of Duke. Outside of metro DC, people view UVA as a safety.

The stats get you a lotto ticket. Then it just turns to luck.

Fortunately they don’t want all nerds.

It's funny seeing people on here say Duke just wants legacies or TO athletes during ED, when the top post on Reddit right now is literally an unhooked middle class kid with a 1590 getting into Duke: https://www.reddit.com/r/ApplyingToCollege/comments/1pntpkj/finally_made_my_asian_parents_proud_3/
