Luke and Laura fame from General Hospital.
Until recently I did not know he was gay. Back in the day that knowledge would have ruined the Luka and Laura story. https://www.tvinsider.com/1234092/anthony-geary-dead-general-hospital-luke-spencer/ |
| This is very sad. And it makes me feel very old. |
| Sad! RIP and respect. |
|
A little odd that his partner/husband of 30 years was never publicly acknowledged before now.
GH was such a fun watch in my formative years. He was a force. May he rest in peace. |
| I feel this more than Rob Reiner. I was in high school in the 80s. General Hospital was my break before starting homework. Sad. |
He's been out for a while. He married in 2019, after he'd retired from acting. It just hadn't hit the public consciousness until now sadly, but he and his husband posted actively on social media. |
| I loved General Hospital. So sad to hear about his passing! |
|
I didn’t know he was gay either. Notthattheresanythingwrongwithit…. I was 100% one of the 30 million that watched that wedding. I was in 8th grade when that aired and it was all anyone could talk about that. We sprinted home!

As a 60 yo who rushed home from middle school to watch GH I was today years old to find out he was gay I NEVER NEVER even thought for a moment he wasn't passionately in love with Genie Francis/Laura What a great actor for real I kind of love that I never questioned his orientation and never questioned his passionate love for Laura Now I know why she looked so safe with him all the time even as he was being Luke with Laura |
| People Magazine pointed out that he actually co-starred in an episode of All in the Family with Rob Reiner and then they died on the same day. Weirdly, my family and I just watched that episode a few months ago (we have a tradition of watching reruns of old shows together). RIP to them both |
| So sad. I watched GH every day after school when I was in high school in the 80s. I’m learning now that he was gay, but I also didn’t realize how old he was - at least how much older than me. |
+1 except 9th grade. |

I was also a llongtkme GH fan (watched if from 1979 through about 2009) and also did not know he was gay. It makes sense because he was famously reclusive for a soap star — he mostly lived in Europe and his character was famous for abruptly disappearing for years and then reappearing, basically because Anthony was always quitting but then eventually would be lured back to be on for a period of months or sometimes a year or two — probably when he was getting a little low on cash or bored. He was always portrayed as “eccentric” but closeted makes total sense.
He was also famous for ad libbing many of his own lines. Over decades, his character had a very consistent voice —- despite the contestant churn in the writing staff. |
But his character raped hers. That was pretty edgy even back then and didn’t ruin the story between them. |
|
Sad about Anthony but that Luke & Laura ‘rape is love, so long as he apologizes’ storyline was seriously disgusting and mind warped a lot of young girls young women.
The writers should have given a better origin story to Luke & Laura. RIP Anthony |
