My senior did the direct enroll year at Oxford last year through Amherst college. It was easily the best year of her life and she’s applying to grad school in the UK because she’s eager to go back. She especially loved the academic independence coming from a small college. The only complaint she really had was the academic calendar. There were long stretches she was at home when friends were at school and vice versa.

Years ago I did the Hansard Scholars program— it was like 2 days a week of internship with an MP and 2 days a week of seminar style classes. It was a great program, although we didn’t have a lot of contact with other students (it was run under the aegis of Birkbeck, University of London).

Do you have a ballpark idea of how many Amherst students do this annually? Is it competitive?

My high school junior is comparing Amherst and Williams, very interested in WEPO, but our understanding is that some years it can be hard to get.
