For those who have been through this experience before: How did you choose a family therapist? Did the family therapist coordinate/ communicate with individual therapists that your kids had (if they had a separate therapist)?
We have two teens, both with long term depression, anxiety & one who has been having crises for the last 8 weeks. It has affected our oldest in a really negative way - and I think our family needs help! |
| We contacted many places and took the only one that had evening and weekend availability. It was short lived, since the therapist availability changed. |
| And no, there was no coordination of individual therapists. |
| Thanks, PP. Ugh, I figured it would be hard to find someone and then coordinate. |

We asked our son's individual therapist for a referral - the therapist really encouraged family therapy, and then referred us to someone he knew that was well equipped to help our specific needs.
There was coordination, but it was pretty minimal. These two therapists had clients in common in the past, and knew each other's styles, so even though they probably only talked once or twice (throughout multiple years) the therapy was well aligned goal wise via reporting from parents to either therapist. |
| We were referred to someone in the same therapy practice and there was good coordination between Dc’s therapist and the family therapist. It was very helpful. |
