Is Jack too popular of a name?

Anonymous
My husband's name is John. I love this name, and if we have a boy, I would love to name him John. Problem: my dad is John, and...so is his. Husband refuses unless we can call him Jack. But....are there two many little Jacks out there? This is our first, so I'm not in enough circles of children to know how truly popular this name is.

Hands down, the most popular name out there. But if you like it, go for it. There is a reason it's so popular!

Yes, but if you like it, use it. Who cares about everyone else?

My son also has a popular name. It has special meaning for DH and I. If you like it, use it. I haven't had any problems with duplicate names in his preschool.

Yes, it is definitely popular. Some just name their kids Jack, and I've heard is as a nickname for John, Jackson, and even Jacob.

It sucks, because it was my grandfather's name and I'd love to use it, but I don't like the idea of him being one of 5 Jacks in class.

I know a few Jacksons who might occasionally go by Jack, don't know any little Johns who go by Jack. There are plenty of people with common names, and it's a common classic name, so I say go for it.

Actually Jack is a pretty common nickname for Jacob among Jews.

I'm Jewish and can think of 3-4 Jacobs or Jakes off the top of my head, but nobody who uses Jack for Jacob. I do, however, know plenty of people who use Jack for Jackson or just name their kid Jack. It's REALLY common.

Sorry, as a mom of a Jack this is my pet peeve (and no offense to you, PP) -- Jack is actually a classic nickname for John (think Jack Kennedy). Drives me batty when I tell people our son is named John and we call him "Jack," and they ask why.

PP, this is the OP here. So your John is Jack...do you or anyone ever call him John?

No-- my husband is a John, and goes by John. So our son John goes by Jack. And to answer your original question, no, I don't worry its too popular. In addition to the obvious of naming him after his dad, I wanted a classic name that has stood the test of time for a couple of centuries. I'd much prefer that, and having a couple of other Jacks in his class, to him having a made up trendy name like Braydon/Graydon/Caydon when he's an adult.

(Ducking from the moms of kids with those names).

Thank you! Exactly what I wanted to hear.

Sorry, but Johns don't "own" Jack. If a kid is named Jackson of course they are going to use the nickame Jack.

Personally, I believe in just naming the kid what you want to call him. If I wanted to call my son Jack, that's what I would name him.

We are in a similar situation, and had this same conversation (though wound up with girls.) But I'll say that my brother, while technically a John, has gone by a different nickname since birth, and has essentially never been called John. It's obviously on some official documents, but he doesn't even use it on resume / work stuff, and doesn't turn around if you call out John. Of course, I know other Johns (like my DH) who primarily go by John even if they have other nicknames they have used.

So go with what you like!

You missed the point -- of course a kid named Jackson may well go by Jack. Was just pointing out the historic John-Jack connection.
