Coat for teen boy?

My DS has asked for a winter coat as a Christmas present but has no opinions. Would a North Face still be a good in-style option? He wants it for college next year. Thinking this in black:

If he likes hoods, then I’d think so - North face is always in style. My kid dislikes hoods and prefers hats. Especially with a backpack as it pushes it up.

Will he stay the same size this year and next?

Our college kid has a Northface jacket, but a darker color, which won't show dirt as much. He's a senior and has been wearing it for 4 years

Uniqlo has nice men's puffer coats. My college boy likes his.

Great coat OP

Yes, boys wear these.

It is a great choice and can last for years.

Patagonia makes a version as well so does REI co op.

The North Face one would be my pick. Check a few places sometimes Nordstrom and REI have better prices on them than Dicks. If they still carry them.

Recently got this one for my HS senior (planning to go to a cold-weather university): https://www.patagonia.com/product/mens-downdrift-insulated-jacket/20600.html?cgid=mens-jackets-vests-insulated

Wore it in very cold mountain weather and said it was super-warm. Likes the detachable hood.

If your kid is going to spend any time walking outside in the dark, PLEASE reconsider the black. Get something that will at least light up when it passed by headlights.

I was coming on here to ask the EXACT same question! My hs senior will be in Maine next year so looking for something warm and high quality to last the four years. I’m headed to REI this afternoon. In addition to North Face and Pategonia, any other brands I should check out? Thanks!

Consider Carhartt, too. It's a popular brand right now, although I don't know if it's the best choice if you want a coat for extreme cold vs. normal cold.
