Is Field School a hard admit for 9th grade?

Anonymous
What are the odds of admission for 9th grade? Do they share their acceptance rate?
Anonymous
I have not seen a published admission rate. I believe that in the last few years it has become more difficult to get accepted in 9th based on what our middle school counselor said.

Every decent private is now difficult to get into for 9th. At least in DC and MD.

Very easy for full pay.

Yes, applications are up everywhere. Yes, full pay probably helps. And Field has become very competitive.

How does a family identify that they only need a little FA vs. a lot? Does applying for FA decrease a student's ability to get accepted?

I don’t think you submit that you need “a little” versus “a lot.” Either you apply for financial aid or you don’t.

Field is no longer an easy admit but is certainly not as hard as some. Field very much looks for kids for whom Field is a good fit and the target of their school application process as opposed to a safety school for those applying to the most competitive ones.

Field is weird. It's definitely not an "easy" admit, but they care most about fit. They will absolutely accept a B student that's a good fit over an A student that's not.

They give out very generous FA for many families.

What is Fields ideal ‘fit’ for a student?

Depends on the cohort they're building. It starts in middle school and goes on from there. They - like other small privates - are intentional in this way.

A previous poster said Field is looking for families that absolutely want to be there as opposed to ones that see Field as a safety school. I have to assume that is a huge piece of what it means to be a good fit. And the admissions team has probably become very skilled at figuring out who those families are, by the way they answer questions. I’m sure that scrambling to fill the school in the late spring off the wait list constitutes an admissions horror show. And according to other threads here, The Field waitlist has not been moving the last couple years because they’ve been getting the kids they want. So when another poster said Field might possibly take a B student over an A student, maybe that A student is obviously targeting some other school.
