Private high school - deferral eventually a NO? Moved on?

Anonymous
Deferred at a T10 school today. Should DC move on emotionally except for throwing in a LOCI? ED2 at a less selective school? Or RD without ED2 just in case deferral turns into an accept? Have enough safety and target schools on the list. If btdt, how did your DC handle this and what outcome?

DC took it very well, will hang out with friends tonight.

I do know of someone who got into Hopkins RD after a deferral last year. It’s kind of a confusing school to predict bc of the ED2 factor. I hope it turns out for the best!

Thank you! Yes, it’s Hopkins. (

It honestly depends on the entire application - you can't just pivot like that.

Major? Competition from school?
Anything truly unique or standout in the application?

In my experience from a "Big3" or top private in DC, most top10 ED/SCEA deferrals that turned into acceptances were legacies or siblings or VIPs or all of the above. Very few unhooked kids were deferred ED and then accepted RD. If they were going to get accepted unhooked it was generally outright in ED/SCEA or outright in RD. Many kids (my own included) were deferred and then rejected in RD or deferred and then waitlisted in RD and then rejected. I.e. that ED deferral was a road to nowhere for the unhooked.

That said, I don't know anything about Hopkins specifically. My post is mainly about the Ivies.

Previous poster again: look at the individual deferral-to-acceptance rate for the college.

At most it's something like a 5% acceptance rate in RD for those who have been deferred. So 95% of deferrals are eventually rejected.
It's not great odds. MAYBE slightly higher for private school kids but again, this is because most who are eventually accepted are (in my experience) legacies.

Should DC move on emotionally? Definitely! Move on, that is the healthiest posture. Send a LOCI, keep grades high, shift emotional energy to RD list.

ED2 or not? If there is a clear second choice, yes. If not, skip ED2.

As simple as that.

We are in a similar boat. DD got deferred from. WUSTL yesterday. She didn’t take it nearly as well as your DS, but she will move on to ED2 her second choice school, which she loved almost as much as WUSTL.

My kid got off the WL (rd) May 5th prior year for Hopkins- but got off 2 others too and chose one of those.

OP- my kid was deferred EA from Georgetown and then cleaned up in the RD round, in addition to getting into Georgetown post-deferral.

He did not ED2 anywhere because didn’t love any schools that offered it.

What is your DD's 2nd choice?

Isn’t deferral for legacies called “courtesy deferral”? Meaning it’s in fact a rejection in name of a deferral because they are legacies so that they don’t reject outright?

What does being from a private high school have to do with anything? A deferral is a deferral.

Historically deferred kids have a much higher chance of getting in to many top schools from a private. The college counselors know the reps well.

St. Marks in Dallas had all three of their Brown ED deferred students accepted in RD. I'm sure the school had something to do with it.
