Thoughts on Park Children’s?

Anonymous
We’re considering Park Children’s Day School for 2k. I know WSMS seems to be the gold standard for UWS preschools, but PCDS would work better for us for logistical reasons. Any experience/thoughts on the school - academics and culture - or exmissions?

I think you need a clue if the new Director is able and willing to play the exmissions game. I assume that’s your ultimate goal- a good NYC private. The new one didnt work in that kind of setup before it looks like, and PCDS hasnt had a different director in like 40 yrs, so I would want to hear her priorities.

WSMS and Park Children's both have new directors this year. I can't imagine exmissions will drastically change overnight at either school.

We chose PCDS. The teachers are fantastic, the community is warm and friendly, my child loves school and is learning so much. It feels more preparatory than other play-based schools we toured without sacrificing any joy. The new director is the former director of Rockefeller Child and Family Center and she did exmissions there, so she understands the game.

Good culture, really nice people
But lots of siblings and legacies. And lots of connected people in other ways (reporters, actors, authors). You need to find out if the unconnected kids get into Collegiate, Brearley, and Trinity at the same rate.
Only pick WSMS if you are dead set on Montessori pedagogy. And if you are okay with a big school (I think 75 kids graduate as compared to 40 kids from PCDS)

We hada great experience at PCDS, though I admittedly know very little about the new director, as my kids are no longer in preschool. Wonderful teachers, nice families, and a convenient for us location. I don’t think WSMS is any better than PCDS, so if PCDS is easier for you logistically, I would 100% go there without hesitation.

You mentioned “academics”…. there is basically zero academic learning at PCDS. It is all play based learning. We were fine with that approach (and my kids are doing very well academically now in TT schools), but you should be aware of that.
