study hall?

Does anyone know what the rules are for taking a study hall in high school? My kid is at Blair and she'll be taking a heavy load of APs next year, and her other requirements have been met. But the course catalogue says the counselor has to sign off on enrollment in a study hall. She could do ceramics or something like that but having extra time to get homework done seems more appealing to her.

DD took a study half (not at Blair) one semester of sophomore year. I think in general the counselor has to sign off on any course schedule so this may just be part of the normal process.

It is an actual class, you can’t have a free period. The class is graded but all DD had to do is show her planner and maybe answer a couple of one sentence questions weekly. It is graded and shows up on the transcript as a non-honors class.

For context, my kid took study hall because she was doing compressed health A and B as an online course in the evening that semester.
