Emotional Child

I’m also going to message our ped, but also wanted to crowd source. Our middle child (boy, 8) has always been very sensitive and emotional, but his emotions now seem to be atypical of children his age. He’s quick to tear up over very small things, always thinks things are unfair or someone is out to get him, etc. I’m worried this is going to start impacting his friendships and it’s already impacting our family — our other kids walk on eggshells trying not to upset him. Do you think this is something a therapist or someone could help him work through?

Yes, but look for a therapist that focuses on skill-based learning not just talk therapy.

My younger daughter and I both have ADHD and both struggle with dramatic emotions. Meds and therapy both help somewhat.

I teach 8 year olds and a lot of the boys are as emotional or even more emotional than the girls. I don’t think it’s necessarily as atypical as you think.

However as a mom of an emotional kid with anxiety, I wouldn’t tiptoe around trying to avoid the crying. That does nothing to help him build resilience and defenses. I’m not saying his sibling should bait him, but they should treat him naturally and your job is to work with him to develop strategies for when he’s having trouble regulating.

8 is a hard age for boys.

Social skills classes helped my DS with that kind of thing at that age.
