Driving without a bumper grille

Anonymous
My College son lost control of the car last night driving on black ice and hit a ditch. Thank goodness the only damage is the front bumper grille, which broke off. He drives a small sedan.

He's done with finals tomorrow and was planning to drive back home on Thursday. He's 2 hours away.
He took the vehicle to a body shop today and they told him they could fix it but it would take a week or so.

He said they told him the car is drivable, even on highway.... but it is really Ok to drive a car without a bumper grille?

My husband says he should not drive it like that for 2hrs. My son just wants to come home...

Of course it’s fine. Just don’t bump into anything

I guess OP has never met an Altima driver.

It's legal but if he hits anything it will damage the whole front of the car that the bumper protects.

Front bumper grille?

Do you mean a chromed part that is partly decorative?

Make sure the lights work correctly. Being struck can ruin the filaments and make them burned out.

Also make sure there aren't pinhole leaks in the fluid systems. I once drove a car about 125 miles after a baseball sized rock cracked the lower part of my front bumper at highway speed. The day I drove it into the dealer, it became apparent that fluid had leaked out of the radiator area, and that was starting to affect drivability.

This is also a good time to be part of AAA or another towing service.

Yeah, but are they all painted the same color?

I think it's okay if he commits to driving carefully, hanging out in the right lane.
