I wonder if they wanted Sheinelle from the start but she wasn’t ready with everything her family was going through. I think she’s a good fit.

Possibly. Or they wanted to use having the "friends" work with Jenna as their audition for the full time role.

Sheinelle is already in the NBC family, presumably known and liked by her coworkers, so it seems like a good decision. I hope it's a happy transition for her after experiencing such loss.

When they announced it, that was immediately what I thought. I’m sure they were giving her some time to deal with the loss of her husband before she had to make a major career decision like this. And so they weren’t going to advertise that. When she was ready to come back, they announced it. I would be shocked if she wasn’t considered for it all along since she has been there so long and seems really well liked by the viewers.

Maybe they couldn't find anyone who wanted to work with JBH (would speak volumes)? And she didn't want to have the show cancelled? Do they really need that hour?

It helps to have a second host who is not white - for that time slot and the audience demographic.
