Navy swim camp

DD attended last summer, loved it, and wants to go again. DH and I aren't thrilled with how the recent security incident was handled (his background is military LE) and are on the fence about it. Are we overthinking it?

What was the security incident at the camp?

We did it for years. They keep the kids in groups with a staff member and the director is very protective and no nonsense. We used to pull our kid out for a meal and we had to go through specific procedures and staff would hand over our child, even when they were a teen. And, take them back. Its one of the few camps I trust.

And, we do another camp now there and we'll go back.

The recent active shooter incident if Tbats what you mean had nothing to do with summer camp or kids. No connection whatsoever.

The Navy camp is better than the UVA camp, we love it. Very technical, whereas UVA is a reward/fun camp. Each has their place.

Is this a good idea for a nine year old or better to wait?

My child went last year and enjoyed it overall but doesn't want to go back. Says the water was too cold.

My kid did the clinic day last year and we found it to be not worth it. Too much talking and not enough swimming, coaching, or correcting. I wouldn't pay for a week of the same when my kid could stay with their own club _and_ summer coaches and make actual progress. Sleepaway fun can be had in other ways and places.

Most club coaches prefer you not do any camps. You don't get as much out of it as you do from a club practice.

While that may be true, the Navy camps are amazing. It gives you exposure to great coaches and if you are looking to swim for Navy in the future when you get to college this gets you on their radar.

Also, you meet other swimmers which is a bonus versus seeing the same faces at your club practice every day all year. You also get to have fun at a college pool in Annapolis and I think fun is something that keeps swimmers swimming.

For a week long camp I’m pretty sure that it won’t “ruin” your club season. Get out and live a little!!

There are no security issues at the Academy and the camp is totally safe. The mods aren’t even there in the summer. Annapolis is general much safer than Baltimore or DC and the yard is restricted access.

They do keep the water colder at Lejeune - this is on purpose for the mids! Supposed to mimic the cold water in the ocean 😂

Yes, we started at that age. You can do day camp, not overnight.
