VA Beach traffic question

Anonymous
Hey so I have to be at the VA Beach sports complex at 9:00 am on Saturday.

I can’t hit the road Friday until 3:00 from Nova heading for a hotel in VAB.
During the summer I would never consider driving anywhere 95s on a Friday late afternoon. You couldn’t pay me. And I know traffic around VA Beach is no joke.

Is it also dumb to consider this drive this in December?

Looking for any input from folks who are more familiar with 64 and VA beach region traffic.

Thanks

I would go as soon as you’re able on Friday afternoon and take the express lanes. It’s about 4 hours from NOVA, maybe more like 4.5 on a Friday afternoon.

I’ve done that drive before many times in the past 3-4 years because my kid ran track in HS and that’s where all the main state meets are, especially for winter track. Spring track championships are in Newport News, so, same thing.

The worst part is going to be the first 2 hours to Richmond. Stop on 64 around Richmond or in Williamsburg for a quick dinner break.

Wait until after 7pm. Gives yourself 5-6 hours. Where you don’t have traffic will be construction delays

If you’re passing Williamsburg around 6pm, you should be fine the rest of the way to VB, unless there’s an accident or stoppage at the tunnel.

You really don’t have to wait until after seven. If you’re better driving at night, or are used to staying up past midnight sure, but if you leave at three, it’s really not that much slower. Honestly, the worst part is the first two hours I swear, and the express lanes really help that

I would eat dinner and refuel either someplace off 295 near Richmond or near Williamsburg. The HRBT will tend to clear slowly after rush hour. The time spent on dinner likely will be regained by less delay at the HRBT.
