Toothbrush or toothpaste

If you had to pick only one, which one is a must have: toothpaste or toothbrush?

Toothpaste. You can put it on a clean washcloth to brush your teeth.

Toothbrush. You can use baking soda or salt as toothpaste and the mechanical action will get your teeth clean.

Are you the "washcloth" poster from a different thread who was advising others to use washcloths?

Toothbrush, 100%. Brushing is far more vital to removing plaque than toothpaste. Gum health is vital.

However, the fluoride in toothpaste is pretty darn important as well. I suppose you could away with brushing and then a fluoride rinse.

No, I don’t use washcloths. This would be a last resort.

The dentist answered this one for me years ago - he urged me to get an electric toothbrush, and not worry much at all about toothpaste - just the teeniest drop of the stuff, or none at all if I preferred.

Not everyone can get an electric one. So the answer is a toothbrush

Brush. But I would pick floss over either.
