I've got about 10 gallons of bad gas I need to get rid of. It's in the tank of a car that's been sitting for nearly 6 years, and I'm in the process of getting it back on the road. I can easily drain the tank, but I'm not sure what to do with it once it's out.
I live in DC. I considered DPW's hazardous waste dropoff program, but they don't include gasoline on their accepted items list (they don't seem to prohibit it). Plus, I assume they'd only accept it in approved containers, which means I'd have to buy two 5-gallon gas cans and turn them in. Any ideas other that lighting it on fire or letting it evaporate slowly? |
| "Motor oil and fuel" is an acceptable Household Hazardous Waste item in DC. I'd do that. |
Ah, so it is. The question is what do I put it in? Old milk jugs? |
| Approved gas cans will work. I suspect they will empty them and return them to you. |

It’s probably not bad. It’s so wasteful to put it into the hazmat stream.
Why not just add in ONE gallon each time you fill your tank, and burn it? |
It is absolutely bad; I think it absorbs water from air? |
| I'd burn it in a clunker. Water will settle so pour carefully into tank, and maybe dispose the last third or gallon even properly as hazmat if water is suspected. |
