Best sleepaway camp in Maine?

Anonymous
I’m looking for a classic camp with lovely summer weather (less humidity) where kids return year after year and make lifelong camp friends.

Prefer 3 weeks to 7 for the younger years, then seven when older.

Need suggestions for both boys and girls. Are there any at the ocean, or are they all lake-based?

Thanks.

Maine has a tick problem. Go to Colorado - great weather; awesome camps!

I wasn’t sure if you’re looking for a co-ed camp. Camp Vega is great for girls.

I married into a family that's Wohelo for girls and Timanous for boys and they all love it. They are lake based.

Our girls have gone to camp in Maine for 5 years, which includes weeks of sleeping in tents in the northern woods. No tic bites so far. Our camp is only 4 weeks, so not what op is looking for. Just dispelling the tic fear.

For $12,000 it better be more than amazing

You really want to send your kids away for that long? I get a few weeks but "7 when older"...

Wohelo’s campers and staff are not very diverse.

Most (all?) of the camps are going to be lake based. Some things to think about:

Do you want single gendered or co-ed?

Do you want rustic and old-school or do you want more a glamping experience?

There are camps that are no electricity/bathrooms in seperate buildings. Then there are camps with electricity and bathrooms in each cabin.

There are camps that focus on more traditional camp activities (nature, crafts, canoeing, sailing, recreational tennis). Then there are camps with 10 tennis courts, a pro-staff, indoor gymnastics facilities, horses riding.

Maine camp finder is a good resource where you can plug in some of your preferences and get a list.

There are ticks all over DC too. Go to Maine.

Maine, as a state, is not diverse.

How rich are you? Are you from an old WASP family? Do your kids go to a single sex private school? How good of a sailor are you? This can help narrow down choices.

OP here… we are not sailors, the camp opportunity is a gift from a family member, we parents have the opportunity to work in Maine during the summer. Kids have attended both public and private, single sex and coed schools. We go with the best choice for the kid.

Really trying to find the sort of place where kids return year after year. But not too bougie. Country club vibes just feels wrong for summer camp.

I’ll take things that white people do to get rid of their kids for the summer for 200 Alex
