Leftover 529 balance for older child

Anonymous
I have a few thousand dollars remaining in our older child’s 529. They’ve been out of school for years. Can I just transfer that into the bank account we use to pay our younger child’s tuition, or do I need to go through a formal transfer process?

I set up both accounts at the same investment company and set up a new 529 account for the other child. Have yourself as the manager of both accounts. Transfer money to younger child account. Or, have the older adult child transfer account funds.

Google and your account provider have all your options readily available.

You need to transfer it to his account. In the event you get audited.

Yes you need to transfer. If you move to your bank account you will pay tax on earnings

Are you not able to switch the listed beneficiary from your older child to your younger?

I dont think you need to transfer it. Just change the beneficiary

If it's just a couple of thousand and you dont really need it, you can save it for your grandkids

you are saying the same thing as PPs. "Transfer" to different child's account or "change" the beneficiary.

You can also roll it into a Roth IRA for them.
