Yes, UMD is not a safety for anyone any more. Has it become a reach?
Kid stats: 1560, MV/DE, LA, CMech, CE&M, Chem, Lang, and Bio. All 4s and 5s. Will be looking at biochem, math, or physics. ECs are creative writing and DnD but no leadership roles. |
| From what high school? That can be the critical piece. |
MCPS Churchill |

At DD’s competitive private north of DMV, the determining factor is GPA. The school is on 100 point scale and pretty much anyone with gpa lower than 95 weighted does not get in, regardless of SAT. Over 97 and it’s a target or even low target.
But suspect this formula is different for different schools. |
Yikes then |

In 2023, DS was accepted Honors at UMD.
He came from a Bethesda MCPS high school, had a 4.67 wgpa, 35 ACT, a dozen AP courses (mostly humanities, none in science), no extra-curriculars, no clubs, just his dogwalking job, and very little community service (just the minimum). There was a resource class listed on his transcript (due to ADHD/autism that he touched upon in his essay) and he did not have a first period class in 12th grade. One thing I've always wondered: he declared a humanities major as an Asian. Even though UMD says they don't select based on major, and given the most in-demand ones are in STEM and computer science... did that help him at all? Anyway. He went elsewhere. |
In what regard? Coming from Churchill makes UMD a Reach? |
GPA is 4.67 weighted. |
Yes. |

Was told UMD was a safety for my in-state private school kid (humanities). Didn’t get honors or merit though.
I agree that HS school matters. |
| Look at the scattergram on Naviance. |
| 20-25% of MCPS students from the schools Bethesda Magazine tracks get into UM. |
with this score - it's a safety. |
Match |
| Somewhere between safety and match. Should be fine. Good luck. |
