Parents, help me understand how you’re thinking about this.
We have the opportunity to move to NW DC or MoCo. We like the prospect of DC better for ES and community building, and MCPS for MS and HS. However, reading local news that appears that ICE has been around at drop off in DCPS and the more Hispanic districts of MCPS. We hate that this is even a consideration (ICE is terrible). However, I’m trying to avoid trauma to my young children. What would you advise us choose? |
| OP, I don’t have the answer to your question, I just want to say that it’s perfectly normal to not want your young kids to witness ICE kidnapping people off the street. |
| What exactly does "community building" mean to you? |

I'm a foreigner waiting for a green card, OP. I hope I won't get detained, I've been legally here since day 1. But that does not protect me 100%. Nevertheless, this is all just a blip in the long lives of your family, and you should not make essential decisions on education based on ICE. That's patently ridiculous!
Go to a great MCPS cluster. DCPS is garbage. For what you could afford in DC, you can get a much better school in MCPS. We moved to Bethesda for the schools. The Chevy Chase/Potomac/ Bethesda area is the best that MCPS offers. We have friends who send their kids to private, DCPS, FCPS, and who homeschool. From all the info I've been able to collect, I think MCPS has by far the best price:quality ratio. |
You should be focused on higher likelihood negative events. https://www.dcnewsnow.com/news/local-news/washington-dc/officials-dc-students-shoes-stolen-on-the-way-to-school/ |

It’s funny how people always disparage DCPS and yet we get more people moving here or going to certain schools here.
Your child will know atrocities are happening, all you can do is your best to minimize damage. Pick where you think is best. |
