
You've heard it all already.... he didn't really "discover" this land mass... he never set foot in what is now the US.... it led to the destruction of this land and its native peoples.... etc. etc.
I'm a liberal and an environmentalist and I feel guilty about much of this too... but I sure am grateful to be here. I wonder how far those who object to the discovery and colonization of America would be willing to go? Sign your house over to a native tribe? Go back to where our ancestors came from? Do you "celebrate" Columbus Day? |
I can't say the controversy surrounding Columbus Day is really on my radar most of the time, but I can say that I find MLK Jr.'s birthday to be a more poignant, almost spiritual holiday for me, as far as secular holidays go. If secular holidays like Columbus Day are meant to instill civic pride, today doesn't do it for me. I'm much more proud to share American heritage with MLK than Columbus. |
We should have a Native Americans Day instead, on another day of course. |
