McLean / Great Falls / Potomac are the ugliest places

I moved here from the NY suburbs (New Canaan). The contrast is striking. Not that I think my former area is perfect, but architecturally it is miles ahead of the DC suburbs architecturally and aesthetically. Very rare to see these strange white brick houses with gold accented columns and other bizarre stuff that look like a McMansion architectural mishmash. Just go on Zillow for Great Falls and then look up New Canaan and look at similarly sized houses on similarly sized lots

Why are Potomac / McLean / Great falls houses so ugly? Curious to hear thoughts.

And your point in bashing, is? You do know some of what you describe are beloved by rich international residents who build there?

We purposely made them ugly to keep New Yorkers out.

McLean has a few houses that look like what you described, but not many. The majority of those are in GF and Potomac for some reason.

I can think of three in McLean, the one on Chain Bridge that burned down and is rebuilt, the on on Kirby, and the one on Balls Hill Rd.

There are also TONS of really perfectly normal nice houses.

There are some lovely homes in those areas, but the gaudy ones you speak of are usually owned by foreigners who have a more ornate taste. New Canaan is more new English traditional wasp. Different things for different folks.

Have you actually been to these places, or have you just driven down Georgetown Pike and River Road and looked at Zillow? Because they are different experiences.

Some of those garish houses used to look less garish but then they sold and new owners like gold, lion statues, etc. One is near a 7-11.

hehehe. We had 30 very good years in McLean. We overlooked the five Saudi houses. OP doesn't get it. Best publics in the nation. Got my kids into our great VA college system.
